Spring Round-Up: A Family Affair - Lifestyle Photography by Jason Connel - Tyler, Texas

Jason Connel October 13, 2024

It was one of those crisp, early spring mornings, with the kind of chill that still clings to the air in the space between two Texas giants—Dallas and Fort Worth. Nestled in the quiet sprawl, away from the hustle of the cities, a ranch stood as a testament to a tradition that’s slowly fading—an old-fashioned cattle roundup. It’s the kind of gathering that feels almost timeless, where cowboys and ranch hands come together, not for show, but for the work they’ve done for generations.

This wasn’t just a job—it was a family affair. Ranchers helping ranchers. Fathers, sons, grandfathers, and grandsons, all united in a rhythm passed down through the ages. Three generations of cowboys working side by side, teaching one another the art of wrangling calves, administering the shots they need, and branding the herd. They rolled in before the sun had fully risen, trucks loaded with horses and gear, their boots crunching against the gravel as they gathered for breakfast—a Texas staple of tacos served straight from the bed of a truck. The food was simple, but it was the conversation that nourished them. Stories were swapped, jokes shared, and updates given on ranch life and family. There’s a camaraderie in these moments, a sense of belonging, before the workday truly begins.

Once the horses were saddled, the real task began—gathering up the calves and sorting them out. It’s an art form, the way they open and close the gates, cutting the herd with precision from the saddle. Each rider knew exactly what to do, no words needed. Watching it all unfold, you’d think it was rehearsed for a Broadway stage, so smooth and synchronized was their movement. Every person, every horse, had their role, and no one questioned it. It’s a dance of instinct and skill, a testament to years of hard-earned wisdom.

As I watched, I couldn’t help but think about the world beyond these ranch gates—the corporate offices and boardrooms where teams often struggle to find this level of unity and purpose. There’s a lesson in this kind of teamwork, something the modern workforce could learn from. The cowboys out here may not wear suits or sit through endless meetings, but they understand something profound about working together. It’s not just about getting the job done—it’s about trust, respect, and knowing your place in the larger picture. There’s a certain ingenuity in that simplicity, and a wisdom we’d all do well to heed.

Lowe's Pro Supply : Training Day - Tyler, Texas Commercial Photographer

Jason Connel September 22, 2024

Lowe's Pro Supply operates with a unique and clever business model—think of it like DoorDash for apartment complex maintenance. Their team comes in and meticulously inventories every detail of each floor plan, from light switches to shelving measurements. When a complex needs something for a unit, they can simply order from Lowe’s Pro Supply, and it’s delivered directly to the apartment for installation.

This particular shoot captures the sales and training process in action. It’s all about teamwork and showcasing the dedication to customer service that drives success.

That’s where I come in. My photography helps build confidence in the process. I thrive on transforming complex ideas into visual stories, creating images that move the business forward.

Making of a Photograph: Mountain Scene - Product Photography by Jason Connel

Jason Connel September 15, 2024

Probably one of the single images I receive the most questions about is this one above. I created this image for Bass Pro Shops. The advertisement surrounding this image was lightweight hunting systems ready for the mountains.

The entire image was created in studio. Which surprises a lot of people. I worked closely with the set stylist to bring this image to life. We gathered all the rocks, grass, gravel, moss and built the platform on 4x4 plywood supported by three construction saw horses.

The mountains, were made from foamcore! There are 4 layers there, and the susnset? Well that too is not the sun! It is a studio light with a gel simulating the color and the mist was a product we call canned atmosphere.

The point is that you don’t need exotic locations, but you do need a clear objective. From there creativity and ingenuity will deliver the final results. This is an excellent example of how a clear objective brought a photograph to life.

“We founded Zeal Grass Milk Creamery with the desire to bring the same pure grass milk our families drink on the farm to homes across America. Our strict standards for animal care and the environment mean that all our dairy cows roam free 365 days a year in their ideal home - on expansive, open green pastures off the Historic Route 66, where they can take in the fresh air and graze on the natural grasses that produce pure, premium milk.”

“The dairy cows on our farm are mainly Jersey, the second most popular dairy breed in the world, known for her daintiness and lovely long eyelashes. They’re not majorly affected by weather conditions, adapting to their climate with a docile nature. Jersey cow milk is known to be richer than other breeds - higher in protein and calcium.”
