League City, Tx Car Fire

League City firefighters respond to a full engulfed car fire. No One was injured.

Its been nine years today when I got into my truck one cool fall Indiana morning to photograph the final moments of a 100+ year old grain elevator. This grain elevator was the center of a community. It was the life blood of many. On that day I put the key in my truck to go go document its passing. As my truck came alive with the police scanners, and the local news talk radio. It was part of my daily routine as a newspaper photojournalist.

What I heard next changed me forever. A plane had crashed into the twin towers. As I listened in horror. My gut told me something wasn’t right. Before I knew it the scream of the radio of a second plane. I knew we were at war. I knew how it must have felt so many years ago of Americans learning of Pearl Harbor on the December morning.

I continued on, and I knew my cell phone would ring the moment the first news reporter’s key hit the lock of the newspaper. I met the construction workers at the site of the destruction of that grain elevator. They hadn’t heard yet. I told them we were attacked. As I photographed pieces of the grain elevator falling to earth little did I know people were doing the same.

The call came. My instructions were simple. Find people, and get their reaction. I went to the very first mom and pop eatery I knew just a mile up the road. I walked in asked if I could take a few photos as the TV spelled out what was obvious to us in the midwest. Then the unthinkable. The first tower fell. Until then there wasn’t a sound, but at that moment those old farmers that have seen many seasons cried out.

My next thought was that of the brotherhood. I spent many hours with the local firefighters. No one knew my secret of how I would end up on the scene of a accident or fire so quickly. It was actually pretty simple. I was at the station. I understood what it meant to be a firefighter. I knew firefighters died in that building in New York. I went to check on the guys at the fire station. There was no typical sounds of the station. I saw men with their hearts torn from their chest. I saw those firefighters with fire in their eyes. I will never forget the 343 that went in those buildings knowing it was coming down to save people like you and me.

Remember them, and remember those innocent people that didn’t make it out. Pray for the family and friends those maniacs left behind, and pray for the safety and resolve of the troops who protect us now.

The old blog isn’t going anywhere. Its going to stay right where it is, so you can go check out older work. Let me know what you think!
